Standalone vs All-Stars
The only real differences between the standalone version (just Super Mario World) and the All-Stars version (Super Mario World with a bunch of other old Mario games) are that Luigis sprites have been changed to a completely new set in the All-Stars version, instead of just having Mario sprites painted green and that the menus between the two versions are not the same. In the standalone version, there are 3 save slots that you can choose from after the title screen, whereas the All-Stars version has 4, and the slot is selected before you see the title screen. Races for SRL start on the 1P/2P selection screen, but it is still worth knowing whats been altered.
SNES vs Emulator vs Virtual Console (VC)
The big difference between playing on SNES, emulator or VC is, obviously, the controller. There are adapters for the Wii that allows an SNES controller to be used through the Gamecube port, and game pads can be used with emulators. One of the big drawbacks of playing on an emulator, however, is that there is a noticeable delay in responsiveness when controlling Mario. Unless it is a last resort, we recommend not playing on emulator. If you do have to play on an emulator, know that you will (hopefully) get used to the delay with practice.
PAL vs NTSC
To compensate for the PAL system that runs at 50fps opposed to 60fps - developers made Mario run faster in the PAL rom to offset the difference. As a result Mario can make jumps that are not possible in the NTSC version, so different routes would be taken. It is difficult to compare runs between these two versions.
This video demonstrates some of the speed differences between PAL and NTSC versions of the game:
JP vs US
Time Differences
- Japanese version is .267 seconds faster for each save message.
- Japanese version is 3.2 seconds faster for each switch palace.
Taking into account these differences this is how it affects some main categories:
96 Exit: | 20.8 seconds faster |
Any%: | .534 seconds faster |
All Switches, No Cape: | 15.203 seconds faster |
Beat Special World: | 2.403 seconds faster |
Any%, No Starworld: | 2.136 seconds faster |
Gameplay Differences
- You can't re-enter beaten castles on the Japanese version by pressing L + R.
- You can eat dolphins in the Japanese version with Yoshi.
- The message at the end of Funky reads "YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER!!" on the Japanese version instead of "YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER!!" like the US version.
- The Japanese version can go past 96 if you use an orb in levels that normally don't have exits.
- There is no Mushroom exclamation mark block at the beginning of Donut Plains 2 in the Japanese version.
- There is visible cut-off on the Japanese version on the right side of Donut Secret House if you scroll the screen to the right.
- The time limit was changed from 300 seconds to 400 seconds in the United States version of Lemmy's Castle.
- There are more arrow signs at the end of Chocolate Island 3 in the US version.
- There are 3 extra lives below the orb in Sunken Ghost Ship in the US version that are not present in the Japanese version.
- There are more green berries in Funky in the US version so you can increase the time by an extra 120 seconds over the Japanese version.
- There is no cape near the beginning of Vanilla Dome 1 in the Japanese version.
